In today's rapidly growing media industry, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication seeks to nurture talent that will help create a completely new media environment founded on social consciousness and strong ethics. Today’s competitive environment’s different media channels like newspapers, magazines, TV channels, radio stations and the Internet jostle with each other for space in the average person’s life. The media channels baits to lure the viewer turn more dramatic, scandalous and instant. As a consequence, in this rush of breaking-news and fat pay-packages, facts are side-swept, research is compromised, and the truth twisted. In such a scenario, it is only a media person with an unshakable integrity, sharp wit, impeccable training and an erect spine who is the hope to fight through the fluff to surface with the truth, a fresh perspective and a new direction.

The courses which are offered combine knowledge creation and extension, craft and context, with practical applications in a study programme of proven excellence. Students emerge from the course enabled for multiple tasks and skills in mass communication and social development. The courses examine the principles, practice and responsibility of communication, and the convergence of print, broadcast and online journalism. The aim of the courses is to provide an excellent opportunity to graduates to receive intensive training in Journalism and Mass Communication through judicious exposure to various subjects related to the area. Journalism and Mass Communication is a practical subject so the pedagogy of teaching this subject should be different from other academic subjects.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication has realised this need and designed the pedagogy accordingly. The emphasis is given on providing practical knowledge and imparting necessary skills to the students so that they could be successful in the area of Journalism and Mass Communication. Use of tutorials, assignments, debates, quizzes, presentations, case-studies, projects, practical test, viva-voice and many more modern tools will promote the learning quotient among the students. The School of Journalism and Mass Communication will be organising seminars and workshops to enhance the understanding and practical abilities of the students. These include special workshops on Journalism and Photography. The School will also organise debates and discussions on current issues and topics regularly. This will help the students to understand how to present and contrast their viewpoints and answer questions which are asked by their colleagues. The whole class then participate in discussions in the presence of a faculty member. This practice gives tremendous confidence to the students and also enhances their awareness levels. This is an important trait which should be there in the journalists.

All courses are designed on strong theoretical foundations, which are supported by applied research into the dynamics of communication and the creative industries. This is backed by imparting professional expertise to the students for which the School has established close links with national and regional media companies. All these activities are carried out to provide an integrated perspective of media functioning along with a fair amount of exposure to technical know-how to the students. The pedagogy is designed to hone the journalistic and research skills through practical work, assignments, project reports, seminars, workshops and to acquaint students with advanced journalism and media practices.

The students are taught during the course they are pursuing so that they will be better equipped to face the challenges of the real world.

The School of Journalism and Mass Communication train the students so that the industry will accept them and employ them. The students should prove their worth to the prospective employers so that they would hire them. The School will be in close touch with the industry giants to understand what they require from the students and the curriculum is designed in the same manner. This will enhance the acceptability of the students and the students will be made industry ready. The objective of all the courses is to focus towards providing the industry with highly educated, nurtured, skilled and competent students by enriching them with right set of guidance and learning required for placements as well as for meeting future corporate scenarios. The students will get employment with newspapers, periodicals and magazines, central information service, press information bureau, websites, AIR and TV channels like Doordarshan, ZEE TV, Star TV etc. At the same time they can do freelancing. Students of this course could opt for editors, reporters, columnists, correspondents, staff or freelance writer, photojournalists, proofreaders, news analysts etc. in print (newspapers and magazines) and electronic (Radio, Television and Web) media.
