Nov 09, 2017

Singh Tanwar emphasized on the urgency of striving for reducing the gap between the rich and poor litigants for a fair justice delivery. He said the notion of free legal aid finds its roots in the idea that no individual should have to undergo trial in the absence of a proper legal assistance. He further said that the 9th of November is selected as the Legal Services Day which was first started by the Supreme Court in the year 1995 all across the India to offer help and support to the weaker and poor group of sections of people which may be women, disabled persons, Scheduled Tribes, children, Scheduled Castes, human trafficking victims as well as natural calamities victims. Highlighting at the importance of the day he said that this day variety of legal literacy camps and functions are organized at many places in the capital city of the country. People from government as well as non government organizations take part in the functions and camps related to the Legal Services Day.

Remembering Late Justice V.R.Krishna Ayyar’s belief that “Society is guilty if anyone suffers unjustly,” Dr. Tanwar said today is an appropriate occasion to keep this thought in mind. The idea which started working in the form of National Level Committee to oversee legal aid programmes has taken the shape of creation of institutions such as National and State Legal Service Authorities.

The discussion was followed by an open interactive session. Such sessions really inculcates the true means of learning among the students.
